The Payson Main Street Program and the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce are presenting the All American Qualifying Race to determine Arizona's entries into the July 22 National Soapbox Derby in Akron, Ohio.
"The mayor made the initial contact on the project," said Carol McCauley, director of the Payson Main Street Program. "I knew about it from my work in California, so I took over, with help from the chamber."
The All American Qualifying Race for the Soapbox Derby nationals will be Saturday, June 10, with competitors from all over the state.
Local young people who would like to participate should contact McCauley by May 30. She is also looking for businesses, clubs and organizations or individuals to sponsor the cars for the racers. McCauley said it costs $100 to sponsor a racer.
Cars will be loaned for the race or kits can be purchased to build an original racer.
The race will be run on Green Valley Parkway and include three divisions.
Young drivers from 8 to 17 years of age can participate. A birth certificate must be provided. The divisions in the contest are: Stock, for racers weighing up to 135 pounds, Super Stock, for those between 135 and 165 pounds and Masters, for those weighing between 165 and 190 pounds and no taller than 6 foot 2 inches.
The race will include at least a dozen racers in the Stock and Super Stock divisions and six in the Masters. Between eight and 10 competitors are coming to Payson for the race.
For details about the race, sponsoring a racer or ordering a car kit, call the Main Street Program office (928) 468-6074.
