After Maryann Pratt wrote a column in the Payson Roundup May 2 titled "Owner of dogs who killed mountain lion tells her story," the newspaper phone lines lit up with calls from people who wanted to help.
Six of Pratt's dogs attacked and killed a rabid mountain lion on the LF Ranch property where Pratt is a caretaker. None of the six dogs had current rabies vaccinations. Five of the dogs were euthanized. The sixth dog, Arkie, is in quarantine at the Gila County Animal Shelter in Globe for 180 days.
The cost of the quarantine is approximately $1,300. The story of Pratt's loss, as told in the newspaper, touched the hearts of pet owners across the Rim Country. Through many donations, Arkie's six months of quarantine bills are paid, Pratt said.
"I want to thank everyone in the community for helping Arkie, because I sure couldn't have done it myself," she said.
Arkie is beginning his second month of quarantine. He is losing a lot of muscle tone living in a cage after a life as a ranch dog, Pratt said, but is fine otherwise.
