The Lady Longhorn track and field team will take one East region champion, Sierra Sommars, to the 3A state championships.
The finals will be held today, Friday, and tomorrow at Mesa High School.
Sommars threw her way to an East gold in the discus with a heave of 102 feet, 3 inches. The region championships were held May 6 at Snowflake High School.
As a team, the Lady Horns posted 89 points to finish third in the seven-team field. The Blue Ridge Lady Yellow Jackets pummeled the East field, carding a whopping 246 points. Runner-up Snowflake had 150.
While Sommars was Payson's lone gold medalists, the Lady Horns will take three other athletes to state and a relay team with the potential to make a run for 3A honors.
They include speedster Janet Echols in the 400 meters, freshman Jenna Robertson in the 300 hurdles and pole vaulter Sarah Agnes.
Also, the 4x100 relay team of Amy Buckner, Alesha Huddlestun, Nikki DeWees and Echols could be a contender.
The three individuals and relay team finished as silver medalists at the East championships.
Buckner also advances to state as a qualifier in the 100 meters and 300 hurdles. In Snowflake, she was third in both.
East fourth place state qualifiers include Shanna Coleman, Huddlestun, Robertson and the 4x400 relay team of Buckner, Huddlestun, Echols and DeWees.
Individually, Coleman qualified in the pole vault, Huddlestun in the 800 meters and Robertson in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump.
The 3A state championships mark the culmination of the prep season that tipped off March 1 at Apache Junction.
