Edwards Most Likely Payson's Next Mayor

Though 405 ballots are still to be counted, Bob Edwards is ahead in the race for mayor of Payson by 833 votes.

According to preliminary results, released at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Edwards had received 2,896 votes (57.91 percent) and Barbara Brewer received 2,063 (41.25 percent).

The remaining 405 ballots, cast in the final two days of the mail in election, will be counted and the results announced by 2 p.m. Thursday.

Those ballots must first travel to Globe where the signatures are verified by the county recorder, then sent back to Payson to be counted.

As for the three empty seats on the Payson Town Council, preliminary results showed Mike Vogel in the lead with 2,601 votes. He was followed by Ed Blair with 2,564 votes and Su Connell with 2,467 votes.

Rick Croy came in with 1,898 votes, Diana Sexton with 2,151 and Barbara Underwood with 2,004.

Home Rule passed with a 62.7 percent "yes" vote.

Of 8,828 registered voters in Payson, 5,080 cast a ballot in this general election.
