If you have ever been to the Payson Humane Society animal shelter at 812 S. McLane Road, you can't help but marvel at what an excellent job staff and volunteers are doing, considering the facility. The shelter is located in an old house that was modified to become a kennel for homeless animals. The rooms are tiny cubby holes where staff and cats co-mingle. The dog kennels are basically concrete and chain link with corrugated tin between kennels. Imagine being housed in such a small kennel for months, especially when it is very cold or very hot.
But there is a light at the end of this tunnel. The humane society has purchased adjacent land for expansion and a new, modern facility. Now what is needed is help in the form of donations, grant writing and other expertise to move forward with the building of the new facility. If you would like to help in this effort, please call (928) 474-5590.
Here are some of our wonderful adoptable pets.
Lucky is a 1-year-old catahoula/Lab mix. She's very shy, but loves to run around and play once she gets to know you. She just had surgery so she will need some quiet time, but once she's recovered, it is believed she will do well in a home that has other dogs. She is also housebroken. Lucky would like a family with older children or adults only. She will need patience and understanding to help her overcome her shyness, and a forever home where she can be a part of a quiet family. Please come visit Lucky if you are looking for a very sweet dog.
Destiny is a 4-month-old golden retriever/shepherd mix. She is very laid back for a puppy.
Destiny loves people and other dogs. She spends her days playing with the other puppies at the shelter.
Please come and see her, you will fall in love with her personality.
Dakota is a 5-year-old spayed female red chow. Her coat is of the smooth variety, thus very easy to care for. The sheen and rich color of her coat attest to the fact that she is in prime, healthy condition. She is the perfect weight for her frame. If you're looking for protection, Dakota may be the dog for you, for she may look formidable, yet she is friendly and well behaved. She is very easy to walk on leash despite her size, and she listens to what you want her to do. She is a sweet lover girl who wants to be liked by everyone she meets. She is a little pickier about her dog friends, though, and may need to be the only dog in the household.
Star is a young adult catahoula hound mix. She is quite spunky and very friendly. Star is definitely a high-energy dog, and the key to keeping her managed is exercise and plenty of it. She and her new owners would benefit from dog training classes. She is a great walking companion and is interested in all the scents she comes across on the trail. She would no doubt make a great hiking and camping companion. Star envisions finding a home with a family who will include her in their outdoor activities.
Baja is a 4-month-old neutered male Border Collie mix. He is just adorable with his polka dot nose, pearly white teeth and white-tipped tail. He has a personality to match his cute figure. This bright-spirited little soul is happy and friendly to everyone. He is a very good boy on leash, even though he is still quite young. He is the type of dog who strives to please people, and whoever adopts him will have no trouble training him to meet his highest potential. Baja is a keeper!
Amber is a 1-year-old spayed gray tortie cat. She has a beautiful blended coat of gray and tan. She likes to lie in her bed and hide, but will come out for attention. She gets along well with the cats in her enclosure and at times she can be very playful. Please stop by the shelter and meet Amber. She would make a great companion for anyone who appreciates a fine feline.
Carmen is a pretty 9-month-old Heeler mix. Her caramel-colored coat is soft and smooth. She is a nice size, not too big, and not too small. Carmen is a quiet, well-behaved dog who doesn't bark much at all. She likes to go for walks and plays well in the exercise area with other dogs.
