A 44-year-old Phoenix educator and Grand Canyon University graduate has been named the new principal of Julia Randall Elementary School.

Robert B. Varner replaces former principal Peggy Miles whose contract was not renewed this spring.

Varner was named the school's principal at a special board meeting May 16.

"I'm excited about being in Payson and looking forward to the challenges," he said.

Varner will be in school district offices today, Friday, to meet individually with JRE teachers.

For the past five years, Varner has served as assistant principal at Sunset Elementary School in the Phoenix Cartwright School District.

His duties included fiscal management of the school, hiring, supervising and evaluating teachers and overseeing school improvement projects.

He was also responsible for accessing student achievement and managing special education programs. He began his education career in 1984 as a middle school teacher.

He also spent a stint as owner and operator of a swimming pool business in the Valley.

Varner is married and the father of four children, ages 2 to 10 years.

He will be the sixth principal JRE has had in 15 years.
