Still Watching The Sky For More Rain

The little bit of rain that fell on Tuesday was welcome, but the rain was a bit of a tease. The forest needs so much more to become a healthy forest again.

This month has turned out to be one of the warmest Aprils on record, according to the weather experts on television. That is good news for my neighbors and me who have fruit trees. There was no frost at that critical time when the blossoms appear. We may have a bountiful supply of apples in Tonto Village this year.

Jeff Shaw and his sons Josh and Jake hunt for dropped elk antlers a few miles from Tonto Village weeks ago. They are surprised to find a full set of antlers with the skull intact.

Tonto Village Fire District

The Memorial Day weekend is traditionally the weekend that our part-time residents open up their cabins and bring along their extended families and friends to enjoy the three-day holiday. If you do not feel like cooking for the group, please join the Fire Department Auxiliary for their first Memorial Day Breakfast Saturday, May 27. Food will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Tonto Village Chapel.

The menu includes biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee for only $4. Chorizo burritos will also be available for $2. Cost for children ages 5 to 12 will be $2.

Please come and support your volunteer fire department and its auxiliary with good home-cooked food, and visit with your neighbors. The Auxiliary wishes to thank the congregation of the Tonto Village Chapel for the use of the building. It is much appreciated.

There will be a Preparedness Outreach workshop at the Christopher/Kohl's fire station #51 on Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seventy-two-hour kits will be discussed along with maps and evacuation procedures by the firemen.

The Double D gals swept the nine-ball tournament again this week. The tournament was held at the Double D Restaurant Tuesday evening. In fact, a new player, Melissa Williams, shot for first place. Payge Ferreira and Betty Koutz were the second and third place winners.

The pool winning is becoming a family affair. Payge's husband, Joe Ferreira, shot for first place in the eight-ball tournament held this past Sunday afternoon at the "D." Betty Koutz won second place and Jimmy "Rabbit" Stephenson took third place.

Belated birthday greetings to Chuck Huth. Chuck added another year on Friday, May 12.

Sue Prach had her big day on Tuesday, May 16, and Annette Godfrey celebrated her day on May 17. Both gals are regular domino divas. They both come to play dominoes every Wednesday afternoon. The Domino divas play Mexican train dominoes every Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Tonto Village Chapel.

Next week Grant Coley and Mike Preston will add another candle to their birthday cakes on May 25. On May 27 is Alice Andreas' big day.
