On Sunday, May 7, "An Afternoon of Opera and Broadway" music was presented at Payson's Rim Country Club. Produced by Ken Brooks, the afternoon featured familiar arias from opera and the Broadway stage. The event was a fund-raiser for the Friends of the Metropolitan Auditions whose mission is to recognize and encourage the development of young opera singers by supporting the singers through the Metropolitan Opera Auditions organization.
The afternoon was a flawless event because of the efforts of the Club's general manager, Joseph Sculac, who welcomed the community to its beautiful surroundings.
I wish to also thank the four audition winners who sang so beautifully, and we wish them the best of luck as they pursue their careers in opera.
The accompanist was John Massaro, who is currently the conducting associate for the Phoenix Symphony. Mr. Massaro has worked with Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein.
I would like to also acknowledge the talent of Dr. Victoria Harris, who played a selection of classical works as the audience came into the club, as well as Laurie Galster, who played beautiful music on the harp during the buffet which followed.
Several willing and able ladies marketed the event by selling tickets and their efforts should also be applauded.
Hopefully, the future will bring us many repeat performances of some of the most beautiful music ever written.
