Postseason honors for the state semifinalist Lady Longhorn softball team continued to flow in.
The most recent honors arrived late last week when two players, Candice Johnson and Sarah Cadd, were told by coach Curtis Johnson and athletic director Dave Bradley they had been named to the Class 3A Arizona State Softball All-Tournament team.
The all-tournament team was chosen May 13 in a voting of coaches.
Johnson was named after posting a .670 ERA in three games she pitched in the state tournament held May 5, 6 and 12 at Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. Cadd drew recognition partly for being the only player in the tournament to hit two home runs.
Coach Johnson lauded the two award winners as keys to the softball program's future.
"Since both are sophomores, we can look forward to more of the same from both these young ladies," he said. "We are extremely proud of them."
The announcement of the state all-tournament selections comes on the heels of six Lady Horns earning 3A East all-region honors.
They included Hilary Armenta, Candice Johnson, Hannah Armenta, Molly Agnes, Jadyn Walden and Kaycee Pugel.
In the state tournament, the Lady Horns entered as a No. 3 seed from the East region matched against Safford, a South No. 2 seed.
After dispatching of the Bulldogs 7-4, Payson caged another Bulldog mascot, this time from Winslow, by a 15-3 margin.
In the final four, the Lady Horns lost a 2-1 heartbreaker, mostly on two throwing errors, to the Florence Gophers.
With the high school season at an end, Candice Johnson, Cadd and some of the younger players will turn their attention to playing club softball in the valley.
Hilary Armenta, a senior, plans to continue her softball career at Mesa College.
