A frightening bunch of ghosts, goblins, witches and even the runaway bride came to the Halloween costume contest sponsored by ERA Realty in Strawberry. Rose Harper and Gary Rains offer this fun event to the children of the area every year. While some costumes were chosen for prizes, all the children went home with a goody bag. Following the costume judging, Tonto Rim Search and Rescue guided the kids across the road for treats from the trunks of cars. More than 35 children participated in this year's event.

The annual Holiday Open House is this weekend in Pine. The businesses will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and will offer a terrific array of holiday cheer, gift ideas and refreshments. Businesses participating are: Blues Gallery, Gingerbread House, Herb Stop, Moose Mountain, Myra's Gallery, Our House, Pine Country Antiques, Pine Station and Tymeless Antiques. All the businesses are located either on Hardscrabble Road or Highway 87. These shops offer an amazing variety of holiday gifts, decorations and new ideas for the holidays. Make the rounds and enjoy the spirit.

The Pine/Strawberry Arts and Crafts Guild will have their November Holiday Boutique from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12 and again on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24, 25 and 26, in the P/S Arts and Crafts Guild Room at the Pine Community Center. All items are handmade and include painted saws, vests, wooden items, bird houses, crochet items, scarves and much more. You are sure to find some unique gifts for holiday giving.

Tonto Rim Search and Rescue is sponsoring a Toys for Tots program this holiday season. Boxes for your unwrapped new toys are located at both the Pine and Strawberry fire stations. TRSR wants to make a difference for lots of area children and ensure that every child in Pine and Strawberry receives a wonderful toy for Christmas. We all need to contribute an unwrapped toy for this terrific cause.

Old Time Fiddlers will play at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Cultural Hall at the Pine Community Center. This is great fun. Don't miss the opportunity to play along with these great musicians or just sit back, relax, clap your hands, stomp your feet or just listen. You will love it.

The Pine Library is planning a special program for local teens. A planning meeting will be held at the library to discuss what can and will be included. This brainstorming session will 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16 at the library.

Tellabration 2006, an evening of storytelling, is Saturday, Nov. 18 in the Cultural Hall at the Pine Community Center. Storytelling is how family histories were passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Come hear these funny, clever, serious storytellers passing on history.

"Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini is the book for discussion at the Pine Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29. Pick up your copy at the library. This is a terrific book.

The Children's Christmas Party and Christmas Tree Auction begins at 5:30 on Friday, Dec. 1. There will be entertainment, prizes, food and Santa. Plans are underway to have something for everyone. Mark the date on your calendar and bring the family.
