Forest Road 300 on the Mogollon Rim doesn't always stay open year-round. Since winter is coming -- you might want to do a final sweep for fall colors in this area before turning your hiking boots south to drier, warmer winter hikes.
The Myrtle Trail is a great trail to take a visitor who may not be accustomed to the altitude or who may not be up for a strenuous hike. The Myrtle Trail is short, easy and beautiful.
From Payson, take Highway 260 east 30 miles to FR 300. Turn left and drive 25 miles to the trailhead sign.
If you want to make this a longer hike and you have two cars to shuttle, there are good directions in the Highline Trail section of "Day Hikes and Trail Rides in Payson's Rim Country," available in the Forest Service office.
