Winifred Esther Cole Dewey, 91, a 25-year resident of Payson, died Nov. 4, 2006. She was born June 24, 1915 in Arkwright, N.Y. and graduated from Fredonia Normal School in 1936.
She taught school in East Otto, N.Y. prior to her marriage to Howard Eugene Dewey on Oct. 15, 1938.
The couple moved to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1943 and then to Omaha, Neb. in 1954.
She was a loving, caring mother who always put her children's needs above her own. She was also dedicated to her volunteer work and a P.E.O. member for 50 years.
While in Payson, Mrs. Dewey was an active member of the hospital auxiliary, working mainly for the Almost New Shop. She was also a longtime member of the Payson Methodist Church.
Even during those rare times when she was off her feet, Mrs. Dewey was busy knitting something special for someone.
She is survived by her two daughters and one son (and their spouses), Juanita and Don Lesh of Arkansas, Sheila and John Godden of Virginia, and Paul and Patty Dewey of Flowing Springs; four grandsons (and their wives), Scott and Laura Griffin, Eric and LeAnn Lesh, Curtis and Tricia Lesh, and Darrell and Mary Lesh.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Howard; her brother and sister, Milton Cole and Maxine Murphy; and her infant son, Mark Howard Dewey.
At her request, no memorial service is planned. She will be buried next to her husband at Forest Hills Cemetery in Fredonia, N.Y.
Donations in Mrs. Dewey's memory may be made to RTA Hospice of Payson.
Mrs. Dewey's three children wish to express their deepest appreciation and thanks to the following people of Payson, all of whom helped to significantly enhance the quality of her life in her last few years: the wonderful staff at Powell House and RTA Hospice, with special thanks to Cheryl Miller, and to Winnie's dear friend of so many years, Lomie Heard.
