Former Payson Athlete Dies In Car Accident

A 25-year-old former Payson resident was one of three people who died this past weekend in a two-car collision in the Valley.

Windsong Duran, formerly Windsong Burdette, was a member of the Tonto Apache track team that went to the 1999 regional championships in Utah.

One of her former coaches, Randy Pryor, remembered Duran.

"She always treated me good," he said of the track member who competed in the discus and shot put.

Duran was attending cosmetology school in Phoenix.

According to police, the accident occurred at 10 a.m. Saturday near the Piestewa Freeway when a man driving a Chevrolet Malibu with three female passengers lost control of his car and hit a Qwest truck.

The three female passengers, one of whom was Duran, died at the scene.

The driver of the Malibu and Qwest truck were transported to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center with numerous injuries.

Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the collision.
