Basketball Team Begins Season With Close Win Over Scottsdale Christian

The Longhorn boys basketball team opened the 2006 campaign on a winning note edging Scottsdale Christian 58-56, Nov. 21 in Wilson Dome.

The Longhorn varsity boys basketball team erased an 11-point halftime deficit on the way to a 58-56 win over Scottsdale Christian Nov. 21 in Wilson Dome. Ollie Lewinson (44) shoots a free throw as guard Miles Huff (13) looks on. Action took place in the Horns 58-46 win over Scottsdale Christian.

The Horns successfully defended SC's three-point shot attempt at the buzzer to preserve the win.

Junior Robert Walker proved he's ready for varsity play by scoring a team leading 17 points. Levi Neal had nine, Bryson Addington eight and Carlos Lopez seven.

Payson trailed 37-26 at halftime and was down by 14 points in the third quarter before rallying for the win. The Horns hit 15 of their 19 free throws.

In junior varsity action, coach Kenny Hayes charges trailed only 30-29 at halftime but fell apart in the final two quarters losing 59-37. Troy Brown, David Carlen and Shane Keith score eight points each. Hayes cited lack of rebounding, a soft defense and nine-of-21 free throw shooting as the cause for the second half demise.
