As the temperatures cool, it's time to start thinking about the hikes down south again. The Barnhardt Trail is so obvious most experienced hikers overlook it with a "been there, done that" attitude. This trail is worth hiking if for no other reason than to check on the flow of the waterfall.
Signs make this trail, 10 miles south of Payson, easy to find and follow. For adventurous types, there's a good description of how to repel and ascend the falls at http://www.toddshikingguide.com/Hikes/Arizona/Tonto/Mazatzal6.htm.
