Girls Cross Country Head To State Championships

The trio of Rhea Cosay, Lana Cluff and Lucy Schouten paced the Lady Longhorns to an East Region fourth place finish and a team berth in the state championships.

The 3A finale will be contested Nov. 4 at Cave Creek Golf Course north of Phoenix.

Lady Longhorn cross country runners who participated in the East region championships included Baylee Crank (mgr.), Rachel Ward, Esther Linkey, Rhea Cosay, Lana Cluff, Lucy Schouten and Marquel Waterman.

Payson (91 points) advances as the region's fourth seed behind bronze medalist Holbrook (73) runner-up Alchesay (39) and East champion Blue Ridge (32).

The Lady Yellow Jackets win came as a mild surprise because some, including PHS coach Chuck Hardt, expected Alchesay to come out on top.

In the state meet, the Lady Longhorns and other East qualifiers will be forced to go head to head against the North region reservation schools which traditionally feature some of the finest runners in Arizona.

Individually in the East finals, held Oct. 27 at Show Low Park, Cosay, Cluff and Schouten all earned meet medals with top 20 finishes.

Cosay, an Alchesay transfer, led the Lady Horn charge, finishing seventh in 21:45.

Cluff was 14th in 22:37.

Schouten, only a freshman, claimed 15th in 22:38.

Trailing in the 32-runner field were Esther Linkey (24:13), Marquel Waterman (30th; 27:57) and Rachel Ward (32nd; 28:56).

Blue Ridge's Jessica Ryberg won the East individual title.
