Time To Reinstate The Draft

For as long as he is president, Bush says, we will stay the course in Iraq. We're at war against terrorism, he says, and if we cut and run now, the terrorists will follow us home.

Others would submit we're in the throes of World War III.

"The sad truth is that most people don't even know that World War III is underway," says Bill O'Reilly, host of the Fox network talk show, "The O'Reilly Factor."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich agrees.

"We're in the early stages of what I would describe as the third world war and, frankly, our bureaucracy's not responding fast enough and we don't have the right attitude," Gingrich said.

I don't know. Maybe as a nation we're already engaged in World War III. Maybe we're not. I do know that 20 or more separate terrorist groups, of which al Qaeda, the Taliban, Hamas and Hezbollah comprise the short list, have targeted not only the United States, but also nations in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. And, I know that Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and Cuba are ominous in their angry anti-Americanism, while both France and China have said that as a nation, we need to be taken down a peg. Other than that, I know only that if, indeed, we're in a global war, it's high time we acted like it.

This means it's time to reinstate the draft.

Our all-volunteer military is so gravely overextended that many U.S. Marines in Iraq are now on their third or fourth tour of duty. We're now recalling to active duty thousands of men and women who have been discharged for several years.

Also, it's time to stop making many oil-rich countries richer. As an export, oil is all these sponsors of terrorism have. Dry up the demand for oil and the money funding terrorism dries up as well.

There is hope in a bill awaiting Senate approval that partners the U.S. with Israel to develop alternative fuels. Meanwhile, as a nation at war, we should be willing to accept gas rationing as needed.

Finally, it's time to rout out and deport the Islamic fundamentalists in our universities and mosques. Radical-minded professors both here and abroad are helping to radicalize our Muslim citizens, while a suspected co-conspirator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing was a fundamentalist cleric preaching Jihad at a New Jersey mosque.

Get them out of here. This is war.
