Affordable Housing Not A Public Issue

Editor:

Once again, can we not get this straight, once and for all?

"Affordable housing" is not a public issue, it is not an issue deserving remediation by the town, it is not an issue requiring taxpayer attention, it is not a social welfare issue -- no, it is none of these and probably none of even a few more.

What "affordable housing" actually is is just another conservative boondoggle to try to wheedle some "special-purpose" tax money out of the various government entities lying in convenient reach.

This money is intended to be then spent in some curious ways to make up for the fact that the employers of this town, and others like it, mostly do not wish to pay or cannot pay their employees at rates commensurate with the present cost-of-living here in Payson.

Once again, Mr. Employer, "If you cannot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen -- please."

It is really strange how the value of this or that government program mysteriously morphs before one's very eyes, depending on whose money is being collected and then to whom that money is being bountifully given.

Good Lord, it is not just the money itself, so give it to the Humane Society.
