The Rim Country Middle School eighth grade football team took a giant stride toward winning the White Mountain League championship with a 28-8 win over the visiting Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.
That win, chalked up Sept. 14 at Rumsey Park, coupled with early victories over Snowflake and St. Johns, leave the Mavericks undefeated (3-0) with three games remaining in the season.
A WML game schedule for Sept. 21 against Canyon Day has been canceled forcing RCMS coach Chris Harold to say his team would fill the void with an intersquad scrimmage.
With more than 40 players on the team -- one of the deepest squads in the 12-year history of the RCMS football program --Harold will have the luxury of splitting his squad into two evenly matched teams.
In whipping the Yellow Jackets, Harold cited the play of his defensive line as a huge contributor. Linemen in Harold's 4-3 schemes include Clint Godac, Val Doka, Keaton Duran and Eric Ochoa.
Next up for the Mavericks will be a Sept. 28 WML showdown against the Show Low Cougars. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Rumsey Park.
The Mavs also play Oct. 4 against Cottonwood, but that game is not a White Mountain League clash.
The season wraps up Oct. 12 in Winslow.
