Still Time To Join Newly-Formed 4-H Rabbit Club

The Northern Gila County 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Club made two field trips in February -- the first one to Heidi Kueny's bunny barn in Strawberry.

Kueny introduced the club members to several rabbit breeds and her daughter demonstrated how to trim a rabbit's nails. On the way home in the 4-H van, the children had a lot of fun singing camp songs and getting better acquainted. The name they chose for their club is "The Bunny Loo Hoo Rabbit Club."

The members met several times in preparation for their second field trip to the Gila County 4-H Invitationalabbit and Cavy Shown Globe on March 17.

They worked on learning how to hold, carry, groom, feed and show their rabbits and cavies. Keely Christensen and Shea Morrow both received blue ribbons for showmanship, and Marcy and Terena Ward, Drew and Baylee Franklin, Miranda Ramsey and Sabrina Goodman each received red showmanship ribbons. Each did a great job showing their rabbits and cavies.

Shea Morrow also won Best of Breed for her silkie cavy. Sabrina Goodman won a Best of Breed ribbon for her red buck Mini-Rex rabbit and a Best of Breed ribbon for her doe otter Netherland Dwarf rabbit. This doe also took Best of Show.

Both girls did a wonderful job in showing all of their rabbits and cavies and got many blue first-place ribbons.

Each of the members that showed a rabbit or cavy also received blue ribbons. Their group leader, Lori Goodman, was very proud of how dedicated the kids were in preparing for the show at such short notice and was very appreciative of the parents who went along for the fun.

The parents and the kids learned a lot about rabbits and cavies and found out that rabbit shows are very popular and lots of fun.

Our next Bunny Loo Hoo meeting is on April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Lori Goodman's home, 902 W. Prairie Road. This a very important meeting, as we will be learning how to do demonstrations and judging, which will need to be passed off at the upcoming Community Club meeting on April 17 at the Payson High School Cafeteria. If you have any questions about the meetings, call Lori Goodman at (928) 468-6543.

If you are interested in joining our rabbit and cavy club, it's not too late.

Just come to the April 10 meeting and you can fill out an enrollment form and pay your $10 fee that night.

If you need a rabbit, we have some that you can buy at a reasonable price.
