Be Sure Campfires Are Out To Prevent Forest Fire

As fire season approaches, we are finding abandoned campfires in the forest, even with Red Flag warnings broadcasted throughout the state. Campers need to be sure that all fires are completely out before departing campsites.

There will be a Fire Wise workshop on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gila Community College in Payson. The public is welcome to attend. More information may be obtained from Community Bulletin Boards.

Whispering Pines Fire District Station 71 has a new concrete parking lot, truck ramp and drainage system.

Chase Creek brush pit will be open on the second Saturday and fourth Sunday of each month. The next time it will be open is Sunday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is still in need of volunteers to monitor the brush pit. If anyone can do the job for four hours on the second Saturday and/or the fourth Sunday of each month, please call Nancy Jones at (928) 474-3088 or 474-2876.

The names of WPFD Officers and Board Members were omitted when their photo was printed in the District Chatter column on Friday, March 30.

The names are as follows: Mark Essary, Fire Chief, Dave Bullard, Assistant Chief, Randy Robb, Chairman of the Board, Harry Jones, Treasurer, Glenda Schroeder, Clerk, Don King, Director and Penny Hull, Director.

Nancy Jones, WPFD Administrative Assistant, will retire at the end of May and we welcome Heather Robb, who is already in training, as her replacement.

At the April 11 WPFD Board meeting, a new pay schedule for firefighters was recommended by Chief Essary and approved by the Board. The new schedule increases pay for standby duty, as well as POC (paid on call) for our volunteers.

A great big thank you goes out to Safeway, Bashas' and Wal-Mart for donations of bottled water for our department. They have been very generous with donations that have been an essential part of our firefighters ability to do their job.

The first WPFD Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast for 2007 was a success on April 14 and the next pancake breakfast will be Saturday, May 12, at Station 71 from 8 to 10 a.m.

Family Movie Night will be Saturday, April 28, at Station 71. The movie will be "Herbie." Come on over at 7 p.m. for food and snacks.

On Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 26, there will be a Bake and Book Sale at Station 71. Baked goods and books will be needed for the sale.

The next WPFD Auxiliary meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. May 14 at Janet Weber's home in Geronimo Estates.

The WPFD Board meeting for next month will be at 6 p.m. on May 9. Everyone is invited to attend.
