While members of the Payson Men's Golf Association were locking horns in a low net tournament in Heber/Overgaard their female counterparts in the PWGA were teeing off the 2007 season in a "two best ball out of foursome" formatted tournament at Payson Golf Course.
In the PMGA shoot out on the Pine Mountain Golf Course, Frank Szakal played his way to a first-place finish in the first flight with a 62. Larry Baker trailed in second at 63. With a 69, Terry Lindsey was third.
In the second flight, longtime PMGA member John Calderwood brought home the bacon, carding a 66. While Jim Livingston also finished at 66, Calderwood was awarded the win on a scorecard playoff.
Third-place finisher, Ralph Lindo, narrowly missed out on the tiebreaker tallying a 67.
Closest to the pin prizewinners included Gary Vaplon (No. 4; 13 feet, 4 inches), Doug Bailey (No 8; 13 feet, 4 inches), Larry Smith (No. 133; 24 feet, 9 inches) and Jessie Smith (No. 17; 6 inches).
In the PWGA's season opener, Karen Peterson, Kay Davis, Sharon and Ethel Zakariason team up for a 119 and the gold medal.
In second place were Joyce Karnes, Joyce Goff, Jan Burns and Dorothy Meek.
The team of Laura Meyocks, Mary Cain, Alesha Calderwood and Glenda Cook garnered third-place honors.
Lois Judd was the only closest to the pin prizewinner on the day swatting to within 12, feet, 7 inches on No. 17.
"We had no winners on number five," PWGA member Joyce Goff said.
