Cannons Roar In Volleyball Showdown

The town parks and recreation-sponsored sand volleyball tournament turned into a heated affair between two teams who battled tooth and nail all season long.

The Cannonballs and Walker's Team 5 entered the final tournament seeded one and two, respectively. Walker's (4-1) only loss during the regular season was to the Cannonballs, who wrapped up the campaign 5-0.

In semifinal tournament action, Walker's Team 5 pulled off the upset of the season, beating Cannonballs 2-1. But the Cannonballs roared back through the consolation bracket to reach the championship game.

In the first set, the Cannonballs beat Walker 2-0 to set up an "if" game. In it, the Cannonballs again won 2-0.

Members of the championship team included Brent, Michelle and Brooke Cannon and Kevin Alderson.

Brooke Cannon is a former Lady Longhorn volleyball star who is bound for Trevecca Nazarene University on an athletic scholarship.

Last school year, Cannon was named the East Region's Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player in the Arizona Coaches Association North vs. South All-Star game.

On Walker's Team 5 runner-up crew were Patrick Walker, Danielle O'Haver, Nate Doyle, Michael Daniels and Brian Schwind.

Walker, a college student who works part time for the P&R Department, called the volleyball league "a very successful season with six teams playing."

His goal, however, is to attract even more teams for next summer's play.
