See You At The Rodeo Parade

Along with caring for and finding homes for the homeless animals of Rim Country, Payson Humane Society is very community-minded. We participate in many community events during the year. One is coming up soon, and is one of our favorites.

As we have in many past years, we are going to march in the Rodeo Parade beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 on North Beeline Highway. This year, a family of volunteers has offered to construct a float for us. The float will be called "Help Man's Best Friend -- Adopt a Pet." Along with the float, we will be walking several dogs that are currently available for adoption. We hope to see you there!

We are still very crowded at the shelter, so we are going to continue our special adoption rates through the month of August. For senior citizens, 60+ years, adult cats are $10; adult dogs are $25. For nonseniors, adult cats are $25; adult dogs 5+ years old are $30. There are also special discounts for animals that have been at the shelter for an extended period, and for multiple adoptions.

Another challenge brought about by the overcrowding is a shortage of food. We would really appreciate donations of gift cards and certificates for food purchases from the many area stores which sell cat and dog food. Gift cards and certificates allow us to buy the food as needed, which is best, since we have limited storage space, and the warm, humid weather encourages spoilage of the food.

Here are a few of the wonderful animals we have available for adoption at the PHS shelter at 812 S. McLane Road. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. We're closed Sunday and Wednesday. Our phone number is 474-5590. You can also see our animals on our Web site at Just click "Adopt a Dog" or Adopt a Cat."

Velvet is a 2-year-old spayed female cat who is in search of good, old-fashioned TLC. She has a long, beautiful, smoky gray coat that needs to be brushed often. It doesn't take much to keep this kitty happy. Velvet gets along great with other cats, and uses the litter box with no problems. She needs someone to play with her and pet her daily. She is the type of cat who will love afternoon snoozes on a warm window sill in your home. Please help Velvet by giving her a good home, and in return you will receive unconditional love.

Jasmine is a 1-year-old spayed female kitty. She loves to sit in your lap, and gets along great with kids and other cats. Jasmine loves to purr and play with a jingle bell ball as well as any string toy. She is the type of cat who will be lazy during the day, and active in the evening. Although she loves treats, there are certain kinds that don't agree with her tummy. Please visit us and take time to sit next to her and you will definitely fall in love!!

My name is Tommy and I am a 10-month-old neutered male kitten. My favorite toy is a ball that jingles. I need someone to help me keep up my beautiful, white coat by brushing it regularly. I love to lie around and be spoiled! Please, I need someone who is very patient with my bathroom habits and can teach me how to use the litter box properly. I get along with other cats. If you adopt me, I'll love you forever!!!

Molly is a beauty! She is a 2-year-old spayed Aussie mix that came into our shelter from the Gila County Animal Control as a stray. She is a little shy in the shelter environment but warms up to humans very fast. She is true to her breed; she is smart and quick to learn. Molly is full of energy and, with some training, would make a great agility dog, or could be someone's companion and best friend. She needs and deserves a happy and loving home. Please come and take a look at her.

Boomer is a 12-week-old neutered male Aussie mix puppy. Boomer is friendly with people and with other dogs. He is fun-loving and has lots of energy. He loves to play and run, and would make a good family dog. He will need some basic training to help him understand his role in his new family. Boomer will need a yard to run in and a loving family who will include him in their daily lives. He is a great dog to take on hikes and walks. Because he came into the shelter as a stray, it takes him a little time to warm up to people. He can be a little shy at first, but once he gets to know you, his sweet personality shines through. Come take a look and see what you think. Boomer may just fit into your family and lifestyle.
