The recent flooding of the East Verde River brought out the very best in the small community of Flowing Springs.
A person was trapped in his van as the waters of the river quickly rose up around him at his campsite. While the Gila County Sheriff's office was called in for help, with all river crossings being impassable, deputies were unable to get to the individual.
In fact, the residents of Flowing Springs were the only ones able to offer any assistance. One individual, Rob Linkey, bravely wadedhrough the waist-high water with a rope, which he attached to the vehicle in an effort to keep it from floating downstream.
With the encouragement of several Flowing Springs' residents, the man waited for the floodwaters to recede and he eventuallyalked safely out to higher ground.
A DPS helicopter, which later arrived on the scene, was very much appreciated, but thankfully ended up not being needed.
I am very proud to be a part of this caring community and feel my neighbors should receive the recognition they deserve for their heroic efforts to help this unknown individual who was caught up in an extremely dangerous situation.
