Harold Rush has etched a bevy of archery accomplishments into the sports record books. Most recently, his challenge has been to convince tournament directors to bring the Arizona State Archery Association Field Championships to Payson.
He was successful in his endeavor and the gold medal games will be held Sept. 1 and 2 at the new Jim Jones Shooting
Range located southeast of Payson.
Practices begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and the actual tournament shooting one hour later. The following day, the tournament tips off at 9 a.m.
What will be unique about the tournament is that fans will be allowed to walk the course with the archers.
Early registrations have been received from archers from Maine to California.
"At least five of the competing archers were members of the 2006 United States Field Archery team, including gold medalists Mark Applegate," Rush aid.
The Olympic champ is a bare bow archer from Grass Valley, Calif..
Rush said the format would be a roving path from target to target, utilizing varying distances and circular target sizes.
Shooting styles will include compound, recurve and bare bow recurve.
