Plenty To Do In Rim Country This Weekend

There are plenty of events around the Rim Country to keep visitors and residents occupied this holiday weekend.

The following is an outline of some of the bigger events.

Beaver Valley Day celebration

The Beaver Valley Day celebration, is Saturday, Sept. 1, northeast of Payson. This event starts with a communitywide yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at homes marked with small flags. Maps will be provided.

Food will be available, along with festivities, beginning at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast prepared by the Beaver Valley Fire District Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization, at the community fire station.

A new attraction to the annual event is a Payson Car Show, featuring antique cars.

Arts and crafts booths will open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Afternoon activities feature games for both children and adults from noon to 4 p.m.

This includes a giant slip 'n slide, plus tossing games with prizes for children in the meadow near the fire station. Adults can participate in the horseshoe tournament.

Food will be available during the day and the Auxiliary will offer a tri-tip barbecue dinner from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the volunteer Beaver Valley Fire Department, a nonprofit organization.

Beaver Valley is located 6.2 miles east of Highway 87 off Houston Mesa Road. Going north on Highway 87, turn right and stay on Houston Mesa Road, passing several communities. Turn left at the adobe wall with the Beaver Valley sign onto Beaver Flat Road, which curves and ends at the meadow and fire station, center of all Beaver Valley Day festivities.

Christopher Creek has bingo

The Christopher Kohl's Fire Department's auxiliary, the Firebelles will have root beer floats and casino bingo with some really nice prizes for Labor Day at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at the fire hall.

Pine host arts, craft fair Saturday and Sunday

It is going to be another big weekend for residents and visitors of Pine and Strawberry.

The Arts and Craft Guild will have its final Arts and Crafts Festival of the season at the Pine Community Center Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1 and 2. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Stop by the boutique in the Arts and Crafts room. It is next to the senior dining room. Many great craft items are on display and for sale.

All money collected by the guild, in excess of expenses, is donated to other nonprofit organizations in Pine and Strawberry.

Navajo tacos will be served at noon Saturday and Sunday in the senior dining room during the Arts and Crafts Festival. These are delicious.

Labor Day fund-raiser

The Tonto Village Fire District Auxiliary -- the "Fireflies" -- will have a big fund-raiser Labor Day weekend.

There will be a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at Tonto Village Chapel, 711 Haught Ave. (go one mile in on the Control Road off Highway 260).

There will be a bake sale featuring cakes, fruit pies, cookies, breads and more.

There will also be a raffle featuring a queen-size animal paw quilt, denim rag quilt, chain saw, skilsaw, fire pit and scanner. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be at 1:30 p.m.

Labor Day horseshoe tournament and more

Firewise East Verde Park, Inc. is having a fund-raiser, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1.

The family-friendly event is at the East Verde Park Clubhouse and will feature a horseshoe tournament for teams of two, bunco, a silent auction, hot dogs and homemade ice cream.

The sign-up fee for horseshoes is $20 per team with 50 percent of the pot going to the top three point winners, with a guarantee of at least $100 to the winning team.

Volunteers will be cooking and selling hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and ice cream. There will be a $5 bunco tournament inside and games for kids.

Firewise East Verde Park is a nonprofit organization raising funds to assist with the river cleanup from our last flood and making the area firewise.

Pine Library Friends book sale, quilt raffle

The Pine Library Friends will be holding a book sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 1 and 2 and a quilt raffle, with the drawing for the winner at 2 p.m. Sept. 2.

There will be row and rows of fiction and science fiction books from which to choose, with special pricing all day long.

The book sale will be held in the Pine Library activity room, located off Highway 87 and Randall Drive behind the community center in Pine.

Tickets for a quilt raffle (for a quilt made by Pat Sogan) may be purchased at the Pine Library or from a Library Friends member. Call the library at (928) 476-3678 for further information.

Senior Thrift Store Labor Day sale

The Senior Thrift Store, 512 W. Main Street, is having a bag sale on men's and women's summer clothes through Saturday, Sept. 1.

Standard size grocery bags, which will be provided, may be filled for $1 each bag. There is no limit to the number of bags that can be filled.

New merchandise will be put out daily until all stored summer garments are sold.

Fall and winter clothing will be displayed for sale beginning Sept. 3. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

All proceeds benefit the Senior Center and its programs for the elderly of the community.

Firefighters plan breakfast

The Pine Strawberry Firefighters Association with the Strawberry Elites will be cooking up pancakes during the arts and crafts show Labor Day weekend in Pine.

The pancake breakfast will be from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and will be served in the middle of the arts and craft area.
