The Payson council has three seats up for election in May and no shortage of candidates willing to fill them.

An eighth candidate stepped into the ring this week. Vivian Burdette has collected a candidate packet, indicating her intention to run.

Burdette is a former chairperson of the Tonto Apache Tribe.

Likely joining her in the race are Rick Croy, Greg Friestad, Michael Hughes, Tom Loeffler, David Rutter, Bruce Van Camp and incumbent John Wilson.

The council seats of Vice Mayor Tim Fruth, Andy Romance and Wilson are up for election.

Along with the crowded council contest, Mayor Bob Edwards is seeking re-election. His challenger is Kenny Evans.

Candidates have until Wednesday to obtain the required number of signatures from registered voters in Gila County. Signatures will be verified before a candidacy can become official.
