Christina Deaton of the Lady Longhorns goes up for two points as a Sedona Scorpions opponent attempts to block her shot. The Longhorns finished on top with a score of 38-27.

The Lady Longhorns started Wednesday's contest with the Scorpions of Sedona Red Rock High School with a high scoring quarter, posting 12 points to the competition's 4.

The Lady Longhorns were able to turn the early lead into a 38-27 victory.

The remaining quarters were hard-fought, one-point battles: 8-7 in the second; 8-7 in the third; and 10-9 in the fourth.

"It was a tough game," said coach Grant Coley.

He took special note of four players.

"Cydney Figueroa did an awesome job shutting down their point guard. They have only two really good players and the point guard was one of them," Coley said.

Marquel Waterman took care of the Scorpion's other star player, he added.

He said Jenna Robertson was a force, grabbing 16 rebounds and scoring 8 points.

The Lady Horns leading scorer was Christina Deaton with 14 points.

Also scoring for the Horns were Figueroa with 3; Shawna Davis, also with 3; Waterman, 5; Janae Blalock, 2; and Kayla Morgan, 3.

The girls will travel to Holbrook on Friday, Dec. 21; then they will compete in the annual Holiday Hoops Tournament, on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29.
