Free Christmas tree disposal until Jan. 12

The Gila County Solid Waste Department will accept Christmas trees at the landfill for no charge through Jan. 12.

The Buckhead Mesa Landfill will be closed New Year's Day.

The department also reminds the public that wrapping paper and boxes are recyclable, and bins for drop off of recycled paper products are located at the Payson County Complex and the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Paws in the Park meeting set for Jan. 2

Paws in the Park will meet at the Payson Library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2. The public is invited.

Users of the Dog Park should make it a point to attend these meetings. Suggestions that might improve the park are welcomed. Remember that the park was built by Paws members, but is owned by the Town of Payson.

Free movie for youth at Pine Library

The Isabelle Hunt Public Library will present Holiday Movie Madness, featuring a free movie. At 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, "Mr. Bean's Holiday" will be shown. The movie is rated G and is 93 minutes long.

The library will provide refreshments. Children should bring pillows to be comfortable on the floor. Parents are responsible for judging the suitability of the movie for their children.

GCC Wellness Center open house planned

If your Christmas wish and/or New Year's resolution is "GET IN SHAPE FOR 2008" then this invitation is for you.

The community is invited to visit the Gila County Community College Payson campus Wellness Center open house.

Visitors may tour the facility, receive additional information about fitness classes and register for spring semester classes.

The open house is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3.

New members sought for children's theatre

The Community Children's Theatre/Choral Group is now accepting new members to perform in "An Evening of Music," which will be presented at Ponderosa Baptist Church at 6 p.m. March 30.

Children in first through fifth grades are eligible, and sixth-graders may join if they have transportation to the church.

Vans are provided to transport children from school to the weekly Tuesday practice, and then back home. Saturday practices may occur close to presentation time.

There are no fees. It is not necessary for children to have any prior experience. There is no audition. Any child who wants seriously to learn, serve and is willing to commit to completing the 12-week rehearsal schedule is welcome.

Janice Weldon, the program director, has successfully worked with children and music for more than 30 years. She formed the Community Children's Theatre Group in September.

The group's first program, "Little Christmas Lamb," played to large crowds Dec. 15 and 16 at Ponderosa Baptist Church.

For the March production, the group will be limited to 30 participants.

The Community Children's Theatre/Choral Group is open to the community. It is a part of the Outreach Ministry of Ponderosa Baptist Church. For more information, call Janice Weldon at (928) 474-7079.

Black and White Ball

On Saturday evening, Jan. 26, at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino event room, Mogollon Health Alliance, in conjunction with Rim Country Health and Retirement Community and DaVita will present a Black and White Ball.

These organizations have worked hard to bring a dialysis center to Payson. With the opening of Rim Country Dialysis Center, they are asking for the community's support. Last year's ball brought in $35,000. If you cannot attend this fund-raiser, any donations will be accepted.

Tickets are $200 per person, with tables for eight selling for $1,500. Each dinner ticket purchased will also receive a ticket for the door prize, an exquisite half-karat diamond ring donated by Payson Jewelers. You must be present to win.

New meeting for ACA

There will be a new meeting for the 12-step group for Adult Children of Alcoholics at 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays at PCSA, 107 W. Wade Lane. The meetings are free of charge (voluntary donation only).

The purpose of the ACA fellowship is recovery from the many traumatic effects of growing up in an alcoholic household through sharing childhood experiences and working a 12-step program.

Payson Choral Society auditions Jan. 7

The Payson Choral Society is looking for new members. Rim Country residents are invited to try out at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 at the United Methodist Church, 414 N. Easy Street. Rehearsals for the May 3, 2008 Spring Concert begin Monday, Jan. 14.

"If you like to sing, want to have fun with a great group of people, and you are willing to commit to weekly rehearsals, come be a part of the Choral Society," said John Landino, promotions director for the group.

Parkinson's disease support group

The Parkinson's disease support group is starting the New Year with featured speakers Vivian Seville, CNA, LMT and Lori Vario, LMT.

Massage and reflexology are considered to be among the oldest and most effective methods for creating well-being. The intention of their lectures is to broaden your level of awareness as to the benefits of therapeutic massage and reflexology. Learn some proactive techniques, creating a better quality of life.

Classic Auto Club

The Rim Country Classic Auto Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month at Mazatzal Casino's entertainment room.

Civil Air Patrol Squadron

Civil Air Patrol Squadron 209, senior membership is open to men and women age 18 years or older. Senior members have opportunities to participate in search and rescue, assist federal agencies, work with youth through the cadet program, or support CAP's communications network.

Meetings are held at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Crosswinds Restaurant.
