Eight Safeway employees built an all-American sandwich Saturday that was 72 feet long and consisted of 54 pounds of meat (ham, turkey and roast beef), 10 pounds of tomatoes and one case of lettuce.
The employees volunteered their time to build the sandwich, which took just over an hour to construct.
The entire length was sold within three hours. Sixteen feet of the sandwich were purchased by a local couple and then donated to the Time Out Shelter (6 feet) and Veterans Helping Veterans (10 feet).
The proceeds from the remaining 56 feet went to the City of Hope Cancer Research Center, which amounted to more than $500.
