The 20-year-old former Payson resident accused of killing his roommate in Tempe in July made a brief court appearance Friday morning.
Jody Cline is accused of killing Virginia Nicole "Niki" Hall, also a former Payson resident, at her apartment. Cline has also been charged with sexual assault.
The state is pursuing the death penalty against Cline.
Prosecutor Ted Duffy, who is being assisted by former Attorney General Grant Woods in the case, told Judge Sherry K. Stephens that he had reviewed all of the documents and was about ready to begin interviews. Stephens scheduled another status conference meeting for April 16.
Duffy told the judge that it was not necessary to schedule a trial date at this time.
Cline must be tried by January 2008, because capital cases must be in trial within 18 months of initial charges.
