The Pine/Strawberry Fire District Governing Board is searching.
The board is currently one member shy due to former chairman Dan McKinney's 90-day absence, which legally requires the board to seek out a replacement for him.
Board chair Rose Harper said that legal council for the board advised her to announce a vacancy at the Jan. 31 meeting because McKinney has failed to participate in any board activity for more than three months.
McKinney's lack of activity with the board is not a result of problems he had with the board, Harper said.
Harper said the board is searching for a new member who will exhibit strength of character as well as good decision-making skills.
"We're looking for someone with a good business head who is willing to make decisions when they aren't always popular," Harper said.
The four remaining board members will participate in the process to appoint a replacement for McKinney's seat.
The appointed replacement will serve until the election in November, at which time they would have to run and be elected to retain their board seat, Harper said.
Harper said that she encourages anyone interested in applying to apply. She added that applicants should write a letter including why they'd like to serve on the board and what qualifications they have.
The board will review letters from applicants as well as conduct interviews with anyone interested in the position, Harper said.
"We have a wonderful community and it is a pleasure serving them," Harper said.
The four-member board has been carrying out normal activity in McKinney's absence. Board action only requires the participation of three members, Harper said.
The board is also preparing for the recall election of member Ross Gooder. The recall election is May 15.
Applicants interested in the vacant spot on the board should contact the Pine/Strawberry Fire Department's non-emergency line at 476-4272.
