The U.S. Forest Service will be conducting more prescribed burns in Payson today and Saturday in an effort to prepare the forest for the upcoming fire season.
The burning will eradicate 25 acres of debris and produce a noticeable amount of smoke, said Gary Roberts, district fire prevention officer.
The prescribed burning will take place in the forest area south of Phoenix Street and east of Promontory Way, at the eastern edge of the Elk Ridge Estates and south of the Rim View Heights Estates.
Roberts said that residents in Elk Ridge Estates and Rim View Estates should be able to see a fair amount of smoke.
The burning will last all day Friday and Saturday, Roberts said.
Roberts said that current weather conditions are ideal for the prescribed burnings and that the forest service conducted test-burns yesterday to make sure that they were safe.
"We have to take advantage of these small envelopes of opportunity while we still have time," he said.
Roberts added that a weather front coming next week will eliminate the ideal conditions for the controlled burns.
