High school registration continues Feb. 27

Registration for high school freshmen for the 2007-2008 school year will continue Feb. 27 at the Rim Country Middle School Library. Students (Tann-Villal 6 p.m., Wadin-Z 7:30 p.m.) and their parents will be filling out registration documents, reviewing their 6-year plan (for high school and beyond) and choosing elective classes for high school.

Scholastic Book Fair set

The Scholastic Book Fair will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 through March 2, in the music room at Frontier Elementary School.

You'll find books for all ages: accelerated readers, books in Spanish, children's classics, cookbooks and adult best sellers. The book fair will also have CD games, science kits, journals, posters and wacky pens. For purchasing convenience, the school will accept cash, check or credit cards.

On Thursday, March 1, the book fair will also be open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Family Fun Night, the Art Extravaganza and dinner.

For entertainment, the choir, band and an African drumming group will perform. There will be African drumming circles open during the evening. Dinner choices are Indian fry bread or hot dogs for a fee of $5 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (928) 472-2052.

Financial aid, college knowledge workshops

Workshops on how to obtain financial aid for college and general knowledge about college life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 1 and at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22 at the Payson Campus of Gila Community College in room 301.

Wildland Firefighting course offered at GCC

Gila Community College, Payson Campus, is offering FSC150 Basic Wildland Firefighting during the Spring 2007 semester beginning this weekend. The class will be held February 24 and 25, March 3 and 4, and March 10 and 11.

This course teaches basic wildland firefighting. Instruction includes locating and reporting the fire, incident operations and management, suppression equipment, fire behavior, size-up, methods of suppression and safety.

Individuals wishing to start careers in wildland firefighting are encouraged to enroll in this course. The instructor is Rob Beery.

Payson Discovery Forum

The Payson Discovery Forum is a free lecture series on science, liberal arts and business topics offered by the Payson campus of Gila Community College, 201 N. Mud Springs Road.

Learn about the National Observatory Network (NEON) and how the Rim Country will be monitored at a presentation by Dr. Joe Shannon at noon Tuesday, Feb. 27 in room 301.
