Smoke being reported south of Payson is coming from controlled burns conducted by the U.S. Forest Service.
The U.S. Forest Service is conducting prescribed burns in the Payson area in an effort to prepare the forest for the upcoming fire season.
The burning will eradicate debris and produce a noticeable amount of smoke.
The prescribed burning will take place in the forest area south of Phoenix Street and east of Promontory Way, at the eastern edge of the Elk Ridge Estates and south of the Rim View Heights Estates.
Residents in Elk Ridge Estates and Rim View Estates should be able to see a fair amount of smoke.
According to Forest Service officials, the current weather conditions are ideal for the prescribed burns.
"We have such small windows of opportunity to do prescribed burns when conditions are ideal," said Gary Roberts, district fire prevention officer. "Today, the winds did shift a little bit, but it didn't threaten the communities, it only impacted them with smoke."
Burning and monitoring will continue throughout the day today and Saturday.
