When I read Steve Morgan's Letter to the Editor on Jan. 2, I couldn't help being dismayed by the public display of intolerance and bigotry.
Apparently he believes that reading a few books over 50 years is enough to give one a well-rounded view. And, that anyone not of his political ilk is loopy.
Unfortunately, his view of history is sorely lacking in objectivity.
Calling those who believe that continuing an illegal war is wrong, "Demoncrats" and "Defeaticrats," displays the depth of intolerance that is tearing at the fabric of our nation.
Why is it that some of those far beyond the age where they would risk their lives in combat are so determined to continue the senseless killing and maiming?
You're right, Steve, that the 50,000 to 60,000 dead innocent Iraqis are horrible enough. That's the equivalent to wiping out the entire Town of Payson more than three times.
Also horrible are the over 3,000 dead American soldiers.
And, so are the over 22,000 maimed and seriously wounded American soldiers.
And, so are the tens of thousands of their mourning family members.
Most unfortunately, increasing the number of American soldiers in harm's way will do nothing but increase all these numbers.
And, when it's all said and done, the Americans will leave Iraq. If we don't leave sooner, we'll leave later, and not as conquerors. Ask yourself these questions: For what grand purpose did all these people suffer and die? Whose pockets were filled with profit? Whose ego was stroked? Was it really worth the price?
Don't you think it's time to stop hating and start practicing the love and compassion taught by the Master Teacher?
Isn't it time for less name-calling and judgment?
Isn't it time to stop the senseless killing?
One thing's for sure. It's time for less intolerance and bigotry here in the Rim Country.
