Sophomore guard Cydney Figueroa's finest performance of her two-year varsity career lifted the Lady Longhorns to a 67-17 shellacking of Estrella Foothills.
Figueroa's numbers in the Jan. 9 non-region clash in Wilson Dome could possibly represent career marks for some varsity players -- 31 points, nine-of-10 free throws, six rebounds, six steals and seven assists.
"She had a great game," coach Grant Coley said.
In addition to Figueroa's eye-popping contributions, the Lady Horn cause received 16 points and some heady overall floor play from senior Rhea Cosay. Sophomore forward Christina Deaton tallied 14 points.
The efforts of the terrific trio were in dire need early on after the Lady Horns led just 8-6 at the end of the opening quarter.
A 23-0 PHS stanza run, however, ended any doubt about which team would emerge victorious.
Among the keys to the Lady Horn blitzkrieg was a stifling full-court press and man-to-man, half-court pressure.
"We played some good defense," Coley said.
With Estrella hopelessly outclassed, the coach called upon his bench for replacement players he brought up earlier from the junior varsity team.
Among the younger athletes to see action was point guard, Shelby Hill.
"She played really well for us," Coley said. With the win, the Lady Horns improved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the region.
The Lady Horns will continue pursuit of East region honors today, Friday, against the Alchesay Falcons. Game time is 6 p.m. in Wilson Dome.
The Lady Horns travel tomorrow, Saturday, to Lakeside where they will take on the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.
