The Payson Longhorns traveled to Sunnyslope High School this past Wednesday and defeated all three of their 4A opponents in solid fashion. The Longhorn wrestlers stopped Saguaro 64-12, Sunnyslope 50-19, and ended the evening with a victory over old rival Apache Junction 44-25.
The Payson squad is back at full strength with a wrestler in all 14 weight classes, which is necessary in dual meet competition.
When a wrestler is not in the lineup, the opposing team secures six easy team points and an obvious advantage.
A number of Longhorns recorded three wins for the evening, which will help them in future seeding meetings, especially the upcoming Tim Van Horn Memorial Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Wilson Dome.
They were Ben Sandoval, 119, Isaac Cluff, 135, Porter Wilbanks, 145, Mark McCarty, 152, Nick Goodman, 160, Zach Rodgers, 171, and Bryan Burke, 215.
It is always tough for a wrestling team to travel midweek after having been on the road the previous weekend in a major tournament like the Peoria Invitational. The Longhorn wrestlers responded as a true veteran team, wrestling in a hardnosed aggressive style.
The next competition is a multimeet at Show Low High School on Jan. 17, wrestling three duals with 3A opponents from the White Mountains.
