Lady Dragonfly will be at the Past and Present Boutique, 509 S. Beeline Highway in Payson, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday to sign the book, "The Insect Wonderland."
"All ages, from toddlers all the way to adults are fascinated with the insects in the book," said Carol Kane Simerly, a.k.a. Lady Dragonfly. "One little boy, not-quite-3, kept saying, ‘Bugs, bugs, bugs and fly-butter,'" as he turned pages of the soft-covered ABC book, filled with poems and illustrations.
Simerly's aunt, Sybil Kane (1902-1994), although wheelchair-bound much of her life, was fascinated by the natural world, especially bugs. Kane wrote and drew "The Insect Wonderland" more than 40 years ago.
"We were together a lot when she was trying to finish the book," said Simerly, who is now in her 80s. "My aunt was blind with glaucoma, so I finished one of the beetle pages myself -- I don't think it is the most exciting one -- with Sybil telling me how the feelers should be drawn."
Lady Dragonfly will be joined by Firefly Fairy (Marguerite Young) and the Forest King (Parry Morton) at Saturday's book signing. The three will be happy to autograph the book for purchasers.
The self-published, full-color book is now entering its third printing since its September 2006 debut.
"I am excited about the book signing," said the new owner of Past and Present, Sandra Whitenack. "I hope mothers will bring their children in."
Past and Present is open seven days a week. Call (928) 468-1181.
