One of Payson's newest restaurants has 40 years of tradition behind its recent opening.
Rick and Sandra Floyd, who are assisted in its operation by their daughter, Monica, opened Cardo's Pizza Italian Restaurant in late December in the space once occupied by the Sesame Inn.
The couple came to the Rim Country to retire, but found they were not quite ready to drop life in the fast lane, Rick said.
They began to look at getting into fields that would allow them to enjoy semi-retirement, but decided to do what they knew best.
Rick started in the restaurant business in 1966, joining his brother, who operated several Cardo's Pizza restaurants in Columbus, Ohio.
"He had 10 and I had one, and my one was the best," Rick said.
The Floyd family -- Rick, Sandy, Monica and two more children -- came to Arizona in 1982 and opened several of their restaurants in the Valley.
Cardo's has had a great reception from Rim Country residents, doing a brisk business with its lunches, dinners and full bar.
In addition to pizza, which uses dough made fresh twice a day, the Floyds serve appetizers, a variety of salads, sub sandwiches and burgers, plus several Italian dishes for dinner. The food is also available for takeout.
Located on the west end of Ponderosa Village, the space has been remodeled to feature a rock interior and slate tile on the floor.
"We want to provide a nice, comfortable atmosphere. We know what we're doing and we do it well," Rick said. And they are using recipes with 30- to 35-year records of satisfaction.
Cardo's Pizza Italian Restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (928) 468-1626.
