Longtime Rivalry Produces Exciting Day For Spectators

Last Wednesday night, the Payson Longhorns made the trip over the Mogollon Rim to do battle with the White Mountain teams of Round Valley, Alchesay and Show Low in the Cougars' gym.

The longtime rivalry with these teams again produced exciting late afternoon high school wrestling for those fans who made the trip.

Payson wrestler Oscar Chavez, heavyweight, earned three victories last Wednesday night when the Payson Longhorns did battle with the White Mountain teams of Round Valley, Alchesay and Show Low.

After polishing off Alchesay by a score of 83-0 -- the Longhorns were victorious in all of the 14 weight classes -- the competition stiffened.

The Horns defeated Round Valley 43-33 and Show Low 44-30 in two hard-fought dual meet victories.

In the all-important 3A East conference, the Longhorns completed a very successful season with six wins and a single loss to the Holbrook Roadrunners. Conference victories are very important for all the Longhorn wrestlers when the upcoming state qualifier is held at home in the friendly confines of the Wilson Dome on Feb. 3.

Seven Payson wrestlers earned three victories that day and they were Ben Sandoval, 119, Isaac Cluff, 135, Porter Wilbanks, 145, Mark McCarty, 152, Oshay Chovanec, 189, Bryan Burke, 215, and Oscar Chavez at HWT.

Their successes show that they are making improvements in the practice room and the entire squad will be spending valuable time fine-tuning skills, as well as correcting mistakes, in preparation for the conference meet on Feb. 3 at home.
