Ernest Garrels, 87, died Jan. 28, 2007 in Mesa.
Mr. Garrels, a native son of Gila County, was born Aug. 29, 1919 at Nellie Beard's house on Texas Flat in Payson, to Henry Garrels and Ida Bell "Sis" Haught Garrels Martin.
In 1918, Henry and Sis had settled at what is now the Baptist Camp Ranch at the fork of Tonto Creek and Dick Williams Creek. They branded AY. Henry and Sis had five boys: Billy, Sammie, Ralph, Ernest, and Francis. With Ernest's death, all of the Garrels boys have passed on.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Mesa; a half-brother, Archie Martin of Gilbert, a half-sister, Nellie Gene Connolly of Oklahoma; two daughters, Jacquline (Robert) Chisick of Washington and Arlene Garrels of Payson; four grandsons: Robert Chisick Jr., David Chisick, William Chisick, and Stephen Bledsoe; and a granddaughter, Kristi Doyle; and 11 great-grandchildren.
