Tom Dahl and Frank Karnes rallied during the second week of play to claim the championship of the Payson Men's Golf Association two-man best ball tournament.
At the conclusion of the first day of play, June 27, Dahl and Karnes, were alone in second place with a 56.
The team of Bill McKenna and Bob Hendrie were clinging to first at 54.
But during the second round played July 4, Dahl and Karnes posted a two-week total of 114 to overtake McKenna and Hendrie. The runners-up also finished at 114, but were relegated to second on a scorecard playoff.
Tony LeGault and Jack Gibbs garnered third-place honors at 119. The bronze medalists were also third at the conclusion of the first round.
Don Castleman and Russ Morris carded a 121 to take fourth place.
Troy Neal and Warren Mulcahy were fourth at the conclusion of the opening round, but fell from the top four during the final round.
Closest-to-the-pin winners on July 4 were Jerry McGuire (No.2; 14 feet, 8 inches and No. 17; 9 feet, 8 inches), Don Castleman (No.5; 2 feet), Doug Talbot (No. 14; 2 feet, 5 inches) and Dahl (No. 8; 7 feet, 5 inches).
Prize-money winners on June 27 included Ed Kuhns (No. 2; 10 feet, 4 inches and No. 17; 4 feet, 10 inches), Larry Smith (No. 5; 9 feet, 2 inches), Jessie Smith (8 feet, 9 inches) and LeGault (No. 14; 12 feet, 5 inches).
