Brandon Kelley called upon the links experience he picked up as a member of the Payson High School and Point Loma Nazarene University golf teams to shine during an interclub meet involving the Payson Men's Golf Association, Prescott Country Club and four other area clubs.
The former Longhorn golf star, who now represents the PMGA, tied for first in the first flight with a low gross score of 67.
Also for the PMGA, Gary Vaplon took second place in flight two with a low net tally of 67.
In the fourth flight, Gary Rovetto was second at net 70.
No PMGA players earned honors in the third flight.
"We were shut out," said PMGA member Dick Ceyler.
The July 11 tournament, which drew 104 entrants, was interrupted three times during thunder and lightning storms, Ceyler said.
Members of the Payson Women's Golf Association met for a July 3 shootout, in which they were allowed to choose which holes, front or back nine, they would score, less half of the handicap.
Laura Meyocks finished first with a 232 to take Class A honors. Jan Burns totaled a 33.5 to nail down class B laurels. Kay Davis earned the top slot in Class C with a 36.
Second place finishers in each class were Isabella Sockrider (35), Joyce Goff (34.5) and Blanche Nyberg (38).
Joyce Karnes won closest-to-the-pin prize money on No. 14, where she teed to within 5 feet, 9 inches of an ace.
There was no winner on No. 8.
