First-round results of the Payson Men's Golf Association President's Cup championships have been completed.

In the opener, which was played July 18 at Payson Golf Course, Bill McKenna turned in a 60 to assume the early lead.

Tony LeGault and Dick Harding are dead knotted in second, with identical cards of 64.

The battle for third is also a tie with Gary Campbell and Dean Bulkley both finishing at 65.

Although McKenna is clinging to the lead, a win is not guaranteed. Two years ago, Tim Ernst rallied from behind in the second round, to win with a 36-hole total of 128.

In the closest-to-the-pin shoot out during the first round of the President Cup, winners included Gary Vaplon (No. 2; 10 feet, 10 inches), Don Castleman (No.5; 17 feet, 6 inches), Doug Bailey (No. 8; 10 feet), Jerry McGuire (No. 14; 1 foot, 8 inches and Al Lyons (7 feet, 11 inches).
