There is a fresh, new ‘buzz' of energy in the ‘old' building at 514 W. Main Street! Essential services of Meals on Wheels and Transportation are primary goals for the new board members seated on July 3.
Excitement filled a room packed with positive ideas and passionate people! President Barbara Underwood, vice president Paul Bates, secretary Pat Carr, treasurer Deborah Barber and Thrift Store representative Connie Jewell were joined by members Kathleen Hughes, Hospice Community Liaison, Lisa Kennedy, Marketing Director for Payson Care Center, and Ray Mudd, Senior Representative.
Currently over 100 meals on wheels are delivered every week day. There is a waiting list. In many cases these homebound seniors would have no hot meal or anyone checking in on them. Ambulatory seniors also come at noon for congregate meals and companionship, card games and legal assistance. With a population of nearly 50 percent senior citizens in Payson, increased funding to meet rising requests for services is essential.
Plain and simple, there would also be no public transportation for seniors in Payson unable to drive, if it were not for the Senior Van Tram.
A major goal of this board is to have the tile on the floor of the dining room repaired, as it is buckling in many areas due to a drainage problem that has existed for several years, because of inadequate drainage in back of the building.
The center has flooded during past monsoons and now there is water under the dining room floor. The town said they would repair it. The board is very concerned that a senior or staff member will trip and be seriously injured and requests that to be repaired in a timely manner.
Hang on seniors, you have new advocates! The 2007/08 board consists of more young professionals than ever before. Expect to hear from them! Expect positive change! As Paul Bates, of ERA Realty, stated "Let's make it the best it can be!"
