Human Smuggling

Illegal immigrants wait Thursday afternoon, outside the Payson Gila County Sheriff's Office, to be picked up by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) officials.

The 12 illegal immigrants, which included children and one female, were discovered by Deputy Dennis Newman after a traffic stop south of Payson on Highway 87.

For Newman, who is a highway interdiction officer and a member of the Gila County drug task force, it was the second time in less than four months he has uncovered examples of human smuggling on Beeline.

In mid-May, Newman found 17 illegal immigrants traveling on the Beeline Highway in a Ford Expedition.
