Q: Why are the cicadas so loud this year?

A: The cicadas make the clicking noises in the trees.

"I would suspect that they reason they are louder is that there are more of them this year," said Chris Jones, agriculture and natural resources assistant agent for the Gila County Cooperative Extension Office of the University of Arizona.

It is hard to say exactly why there are more cicadas. Birds, their predators, might have come to town later due to cooler spring weather, enabling the population to grow larger, Jones said.

Q: Is the Payson Street Department still planning to extend Mud Springs Road to Granite Dells Road?

A: "Yes. Contractors can begin bidding on the work on July 3," said Michele Maupin, secretary for the Payson Street Department.
