Tuesday evening was a very exciting time for Tonto Village resident, Theresa Meeker. Theresa decided to try her hand at some fishing on the Tonto Creek. To her astonishment, she landed a huge trout.
She told me it wedged between two rocks, so she was able to grab it by the mouth and pull the monster in. Her husband, Rick, was totally amazed at his wife being able to land such a huge trout on a 4-pound test line, but luck was with her, when it wedged itself between rocks and she was able to get her hand in its mouth to pull it out of the water.
The rainbow measured 25 inches long and weighed seven pounds. Theresa was advised by Lonnie Smith, who has caught her share of some pretty big fish, advised her how to preserve it for mounting.
What a lucky catch. Congratulations to you, Theresa.
Tonto Village Fire District
Tuesday evening was also the Tonto Village Fire Board meeting. At this meeting the budget for 2007-08 was approved and will be published in the Payson Roundup.
The board approved travel for all the board members, Chief Hatch and administrative assistant Kevin Martin to attend the Arizona Fire Departments Association meeting in Tucson on July 12, 13 and 14.
Chief Hatch reported to the board and the residents in attendance that the Fire District has received 20 pagers from the Gila County Emergency Services, and was funded by Gila County Board of Supervisors, mainly Tommie Cline Martin. The pagers will be issued to all the Tonto Village firefighters. The pagers pave the way to change our dispatching to Payson Dispatch Center. The switchover will be complete by July 1.
A Dumpster has been delivered to the Village for the residents to put in pine needles, brush, tree limbs and other debris. No trash or plastic. The dumpster is located across the street from the fire station. Please take advantage of the use of this dumpster to help make your property fire-safe.
The Fireflies will be manning a booth in Star Valley at the Diamond Star Auxiliary fund-raiser. The Fireflies will be selling raffle tickets on two quilts, a chain saw, a fire pit and a mobile hand-held radio. The drawing will be held at the Labor Day Bash on Sept. 1 in Tonto Village. The tents will be set up at the Moose Lodge parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Water Improvement District
A meeting was held at the Tonto Village Chapel on Saturday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at the Tonto Village Chapel regarding the possibility to purchase the Tonto Village Water Company, which is presently owned by the Standage Family. They have expressed their intentions to sell the company. County Manager Steven Besich and Deputy County Manager John Nelson, of the Gila County Board of Supervisors, were on hand to answer questions from the residents of Tonto Village I, II and III. An extensive report was handed out, which included a budget calendar, previous assessed values and property tax rates. The handout also included purpose and power of the water board, of which Steve Besich is acting as clerk of the board. For those residents who did not go to the meeting, you can call either Steve or John at (928) 402-8754. Steve's e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tonto Village Chapel
Don't forget about Vacation Bible School at the Chapel starting on July 9 and continuing through July 13. The hours are 9 a.m. to noon, with snacks provided and all children are welcome. The theme this year is "The Jungle Jaunt" or "Leap Into Adventure and Learn about Jesus." Rita Spalink is the coordinator this year. Rita can be reached at (928) 478-4282. Adult and teen volunteers are always welcome. There are always some positions that need help. Come and join in the fun. I have helped out in a small way for two years now, and I really enjoy the enthusiasm that the children project. The enthusiasm is truly catching.
Danny Cain of Tonto Village I will add another candle to his birthday cake on June 26.
Happy birthday to you, Danny.
